Beauty Nourish your hair with a pre-wash treatment.
Hair cleansing is going next level with these beforeshampoo treatments
It’s no longer enough to lather, rinse and repeat. What you do to your hair before you step into the shower is now just as important. “Skincare is driving the boom around pre-shampoo treatments, as the majority currently available focus on the scalp and they share a lot of obvious similarities with advances in skincare,” explains Claire Tapp, L’oréal Paris’s national training and education manager.
“There are three broad pre-shampoo categories, including oils to nourish dry scalps, soothing formulas for irritated and sensitive scalps, and clay masks to help purify oily scalps.”
But it’s not just those with scalp issues who benefit. Between hair colouring, chemical processing and hot styling tools, battered mid-lengths and ends can also use a pre-shampoo treatment to rebuild fragile hair and help reduce the loss of moisture and colour during the shampoo stage.
Follow a pre-shampoo treatment with your usual hair washing and conditioning routine, and don’t be fooled: although these treatments tend to be lighter than post-shampoo masks (a plus for those with fine hair), you can still overdo it, so Tapp suggests using them no more than once a week.
