Hair cleans­ing is go­ing next level with th­ese be­for­e­sham­poo treat­ments

It’s no longer enough to lather, rinse and re­peat. What you do to your hair be­fore you step into the shower is now just as im­por­tant. “Skin­care is driv­ing the boom around pre-sham­poo treat­ments, as the ma­jor­ity cur­rently avail­able fo­cus on the scalp and they share a lot of ob­vi­ous sim­i­lar­i­ties with ad­vances in skin­care,” ex­plains Claire Tapp, L’oréal Paris’s na­tional train­ing and ed­u­ca­tion man­ager.

“There are three broad pre-sham­poo cat­e­gories, in­clud­ing oils to nour­ish dry scalps, sooth­ing for­mu­las for ir­ri­tated and sen­si­tive scalps, and clay masks to help pu­rify oily scalps.”

But it’s not just those with scalp is­sues who ben­e­fit. Be­tween hair colour­ing, chem­i­cal pro­cess­ing and hot styling tools, bat­tered mid-lengths and ends can also use a pre-sham­poo treat­ment to re­build frag­ile hair and help re­duce the loss of mois­ture and colour dur­ing the sham­poo stage.

Fol­low a pre-sham­poo treat­ment with your usual hair wash­ing and con­di­tion­ing rou­tine, and don’t be fooled: al­though th­ese treat­ments tend to be lighter than post-sham­poo masks (a plus for those with fine hair), you can still overdo it, so Tapp sug­gests us­ing them no more than once a week.
