Winter is a tough time for hair. After months of exposure to summer salt and sun, the cold weather arrives and we’re left with dreary days and lacklustre strands – the ultimate combination for drab-looking hair. Don’t stock up on beanies for every day of the week just yet. There is a solution.
To find out how to make winter hair appear as glossy as possible, we turned to Dyson, which invested $94 million to analyse hair over four years. It found dull hair can be caused by damaged strands scattering, rather than reflecting light. Furthermore, it was found that a leading cause of damage is exposure to extreme heat, which causes pores to form within the strands. When light hits these pores, it diffuses in all directions, reducing reflected light.
University of Melbourne Professor of Dermatology Rodney Sinclair details the science behind the findings. “Extreme heat can irreversibly damage the hydrogen bonds within the inner core of the hair [the hair cortex]. Hydrogen bonds cross-link the keratin filaments in the hair cortex and are responsible for providing hair with strength and elasticity. Hair damage by extreme temperatures reduces elasticity and causes breakage that can result in brittle hair, which snaps easily when brushing and appears lifeless and hard to style.”
