OUT, DAMNED SPOT
Adult acne can be tough – but not impossible – to treat
We often outgrow teenage acne, but many adults deal with complexion complications well beyond their high school years. “Adult acne is tougher to treat because there could be more than one cause, whether it’s gut issues, food allergies, or hormonal imbalance – the latter of which will take months to regulate and get back to a healthy state,” explains Allies of Skin founder Nicolas Travis.
Hormonal acne usually first presents as clogged pores, then cystic blemishes on the chin and lower half of the face. Be strategic with your treatments because what worked as a teen – drying out over-active skin and spots – causes more issues for adult skin.
“Healthy skin is balanced so focus on rebuilding the skin barrier and reducing inflammation,” advises Travis. “A good regimen includes a treatment serum, barrier-recovery moisturiser, a weekly clay mask and peel, and ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, rosehip oil, manuka honey, hyaluronic acid and alpha hydroxy and salicylic acid.”
Professional LED light treatment, changing pillowcases weekly, probiotics and fish oil supplements are also useful, as is a no-picking policy. “Our skin’s ability to produce healthy collagen decreases as we age, so acne spots can leave scars behind,” warns Travis. “Ensure hands are clean before touching your face, and wear SPF to prevent collagen breakdown.”
Australian hairdresser Kevin Murphy has applied a “luxe and natural” ethos to his first professional colour line. With a focus on preserving hair health, the cruelty-free range boasts 80 shades packed with nourishing, shine-enhancing ingredients such as aloe vera, honey and shea butter, while molecular technology – and the exclusion of ammonia and PPD – reduces the chances of scalp irritations and reactions. Choose from semi, demi or permanent colours, and up to four levels of lift, and expect results that are both multi-tonal and multi-dimensional (plus full grey coverage). But what most surprises us is the lack of that post-processing, straw-like texture. Hair definitely feels softer, and the antioxidant-rich pomegranate and rosehip offers UV protection for longer-lasting results.
