Deadly ‘error’ cop murder rap
A US grand jury has indicted a white former Dallas police officer for the shooting murder of her black neighbour.
Amber Guyger, 30, has claimed she walked into the apartment of accountant Botham Jean, 26, who lived one floor above her, thinking it was her home. She shot him thinking he was an intruder.
Ms Guyger was arrested on a manslaughter charge three days after the September 6 killing of Mr Jean as he watched TV. She had just finished a shift and was in uniform. Dallas police sacked her three days later.
District Attorney Faith Johnson yesterday announced that the grand jury had upgraded the charges.
“When you look at the facts of this case, we thought that it was murder all along,” Ms Johnson said.
Ms Guyger told investiga- tors she mistakenly parked one floor higher than usual and then went to what she thought was her home and found the door ajar. Inside, she saw a figure standing in the darkness.
She said she pulled her gun and fired twice after the person ignored commands.
Mr Jean’s family has filed a lawsuit against Ms Guyger and the city of Dallas. The shooting caused outrage in the city, with many disbelieving the officer.
