NATIONAL treasure John Newcombe is the subject of a new one-man play celebrating his life. Melbourne playwright Kieran Carroll said he wrote the drama/comedy Newk because tennis is rarely seen on stage. “Newcombe did a lot to promote the sport and behaved with integrity throughout his career,” Carroll said. “He was also incredibly charismatic, gentlemanly and well-behaved.” Carroll said Newk had been written with the tennis great’s consent. Melbourne actor and comedian Damian Callinan, pictured, plays the Newcombe, who he says “had an incredible work ethic”. The play is set in 2014, at Newcombe’s 70th birthday party.
