VITAMIN D

Like cal­cium, vitamin D is im­por­tant in the de­vel­op­ment and main­te­nance of healthy bones. The body needs vitamin D to ab­sorb cal­cium, yet ac­cord­ing to re­cent re­search, more than half of Aus­tralians are de­fi­cient in the vitamin.

Di­etary sources of vitamin D in­clude oily fish and nuts but the best source is free. “We can get enough vitamin D very eco­nom­i­cally by mak­ing sure we get a lit­tle sun­shine in our day,” Hourigan says. “Ex­pose your face, neck, shoul­ders and fore­arms [for] good vitamin D for­ma­tion.”
