That’s the think­ing be­hind a new pro­gram

in Alaska, which has the high­est rate

of foetal al­co­hol syn­drome ( FAS) in the US. FAS is a con­di­tion in which a baby is born with men­tal and/or phys­i­cal health prob­lems that are linked to drink­ing al­co­hol in preg­nancy.

Women of child­bear­ing age in Alaska are 20 per cent more likely to binge drink in com­par­i­son to the US

na­tional aver­age.
