Remember those resolutions? It’s not
Although it comes with its fair share of perks, the festive season can take a serious toll on your body. After months of desserts, smoked hams and overflowing champagne glasses, by mid-February you may be feeling a little more sluggish – and your jeans a little tighter.
“[Christmas] foods that are rich in saturated fat, salt and added sugar tend to be energy dense and nutrient poor,” dietitian Melissa Meier tells Body+Soul. You’re also likely to drink more alcohol, which as well as packing a punch in terms of excess kilojoules, can also lead to lethargy, an upset gut and poor sleep.
As well as pulling back on your alcohol consumption, Meier suggests you also shift focus to plant-based foods. “Make them the star of your meal rather than an afterthought, and you’ll be on track in no time,” she says. (If you’re not a fan, there are easy ways to sneak vegies into your meals with plant-based stocks and soups, or salads and smoothies.)
The bottom line on helping your body recover from weeks of overindulgence? “Say goodbye to silly fad diets and detoxes, and focus on long-term, sustainable healthy habits instead,” Meier tips.
“It’s pretty simple – fill up on the five core food groups, which are fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, lean protein and dairy or calcium-fortified alternatives, and minimise treats like chocolate, biscuits and ice cream.”

You’re tempted to play it safe, hedge your bets and carry your psychological umbrella with you in case of a downpour. So be as courageous as you can be and try to stop worrying. You’re more than adequately prepared to make a success of everything that’s heading your way.

You may not be able to tell by simply watching the events unfold. You’ll need to be brave enough to throw yourself into the experience.
