AUS­TRALIANS are well trav­elled bar­gain hunters who dream of hol­i­day­ing in Europe, prefer­ably soak­ing up the sun on a beach.

This is the picture that emerges from a sur­vey of more than 12,000 Es­cape readers. over­seas (43.9 per cent), while 37.2 per cent trav­elled within Australia and 18.7 per cent stayed within their own state. Only 0.2 per cent have never taken a hol­i­day. Mediter­ranean Sea. Nearly one in 10 say they never bother with in­sur­ance. with the cheap­est air­fare, while 20.9 per cent said they picked the air­line where they could use/gain fre­quent flyer points. Just 12.3 per cent said safety was a fac­tor, while com­fort mat­tered to just 7.3 per cent. Qan­tas is used by 63.2 per cent of re­spon­dents. Vir­gin Blue (now Vir­gin Australia) was sec­ond at 54.9 per cent, fol­lowed by Jets­tar at 45.9 per cent, Sin­ga­pore Air­lines at 25.1 per cent and 8.7 per cent favoured Tiger Air­ways. ‘‘Qan­tas is our na­tional car­rier, with a long­stand­ing rep­u­ta­tion that is sup­ported by a fre­quent-flyer pro­gram, so many Aus­tralians are com­mit­ted to fly­ing with the air­line for this rea­son.’’
