Oviedo is one of the few small parts of Spain that was not invaded by the Moors and the essence of its medieval foundations is intact.

More than 80 per cent of the town is vehicle-free so it’s a perfect place to walk around and admire the unique architecture.

There are more than 150 open-air sculptures dotted about Oviedo, from a row of naked men to a demure and well- clothed Ana the heroine of the novel La Regenta in Plaza Alfonso II.
