Last week

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Home -

Dental Surgeon Dr Willem Halm and Jonathon Traynor both correctly identified last week’s mystery item.

Dr Halm said the instrument was a rough homemade copy of a tool for tooth extraction [in animals] in the 1800s.

“The idea was to put the bulbous part against the mucosa covering the bone over the root and the metal element over the crown to hook on to the other side below the coronal bulge and twist and thus lever the tooth out,” he said.

“Funnily, dental companies have started redesigning it for human use.”
