Watkins keeps it clean in title win

Sunday Tasmanian - - Sport - BRETT STUBBS

TASMANIAN Daniel Watkins has dominated the men’s canoe race to be crowned the C1 best at the National Slalom Championships at Brady’s Lake.

Watkins learned from his heats the previous day to put in a clean run and take out the title as Australia’s best C1 paddler.

Watkins finished in 98.31 seconds, almost a second faster than Tristan Carter (99.07) with Ian Borrows taking third spot in a time of 101.51.

“I managed to fix a few errors from the heats, made a clean run, which helped today,” Watkins said.

“One crucial down in the eddy made the course a little bit longer with a few more challenges but overall, I kept to a similar race strategy, which helped.”

It was nearly a Tasmanian double at the championships but Kate Eckhardt was pipped by Ros Lawrence for the women’s kayaking national title.

Lawrence, in a time of 106.05 secs, edged out Eckhardt for the victory, with the Tasmanian coming in second with a time of 108.02 and third place going to Noemie Fox (108.65).

Yesterday’s times in the WK1 were a bit slower than those recorded in yesterday’s heats, which some attributed to a slightly more challenging course.

The event winds up today.
