DARWIN’S middle-distance king, Darren Peacock, and Alice Springs running marvel, Emma Kraft, took out the major awards at the inaugural Athletics NT, Athlete of the Year dinner held at Parliament House last night.

In a glittering function, a total of $3500 in prizes were awarded across 12 categories, recognising athletes, coaches and officials from the 12 months from October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013. Peacock and Kraft took out the Open Men and Open Women Athletes of the Year awards and each pocketed $500.

‘‘We’ve had a significant amount of growth both on and off the track in the past 12 months,’’ Athletics NT president Kevin Mulvahil said at the function. ‘‘Tonight we recognise the achievements of our outstanding coaches, volunteers and, of course, athletes. During the year we exposed a record number of athletes to national competition, taking home several medals and even international representation.’’
