Fishing with Hollywood rocks

- By CHRIS ERRITY

I FINALLY had the pleasure of fishing with Tony Hare after many years of talking about it.

We headed out to the Rock in Shoal Bay for a crack to find that many other anglers had the same idea.

There were another eight boats fishing the area in the hope of landing a good fish.

Now Hollywood fished this area extensively way back in the ’70s and talk of landing monster barra particularly in King Creek kept us amused, as the barra were extremely quiet on the outgoing tide.

Not one barra was landed among all the boats for a few hours before I finally broke the duck landing a beautiful 90cm barra on the troll.

Immediately everyone fired up and were soon trolling the same area and another good fish in the 80s was soon landed.

However, as is often the case at the Rock, the fish were showing on the sounder but were just not feeding.

The tide soon turned and started to come in.

Most boats started trolling again and it was Harey this time who hooked up on a good fish right beside the rocks.

I will be hoping to land my first mulloway off the beach

We landed the barra after a good fight and at 80cm it was a fit fish.

We commenced trolling and about 30 minutes later, I hooked up on another good fish.

It was considerably thicker around the shoulders than my first barra and fought a lot harder accordingly.

We both thought it was considerably longer than my first fish but was in fact slightly smaller at 89cm. That ended our successful session at the rock with three good barra caught and released.

This week I am heading down to South Australia to fish with my good mate Tumby Tom.

I will be hoping to land my first mulloway off the beach and will report on my adventures in a couple of weeks when I return.
