McDevitt’s a natural at drug-free bodybuilding

- By MEGAN PALIN

A DARWIN bodybuilder has returned home after winning the main title at the biggest natural bodybuilding competition in the world.

Andrew McDevitt, 24, was named the overall winner of the Natural Olympia, held in San Diego in the US, on November 9.

‘‘I really wasn’t expecting to win,’’ Mr McDevitt said.

His prize was a ‘pro card’ which allows him to compete professionally in national and international competitions for the next year.

‘‘I will definitely be using it because it means I can start entering comps with prize money and make it my career,’’ he said.

‘‘I have decided bodybuilding is what I want to do.’’

The former labourer has only competed in three bodybuilding competitions to date but has won all of them.

Training and preparing to compete can be a very gruelling process.

‘‘I pretty much go to the gym six days a week, twice a day,’’ he said.

Mr McDevitt said he entered the competition to prove he wasn’t on steroids.

‘‘So many people kept asking me about that and I wanted to prove I wasn’t taking them,’’ he said.

‘‘The national and international competitions test for drugs so there’s no way you can use them and compete.’’
