Schoolies don’t-give-a-hoot-a up in Kuta
INTERNATIONAL tensions seemed to be the furthest thing from the minds of the thousands of schoolies partying along the infamous Legian St in Kuta, Bali, on Friday night.
The wet street was packed with schoolies, toolies, tour- ists and locals as week one of schoolies celebrations neared its end and a second wave of school leavers arrived in the Indonesian tourist mecca.
Schoolies.com chief executive Matt Lloyd said it was hard to say how many school leavers were celebrating the end of Year 12 in Bali, but he estimated it was between 5000 and 6000 teens.
‘‘We haven’t heard of any issues so far,’’ he said.
Darwin boy Chris Ewin was enjoying his fifth night in Bali when the NT News caught up with him on the Kuta nightclub strip on Friday night. He said most schoolies were well behaved and were being responsible.
‘‘We’ve seen a lot of fights — mostly late at night — but they’re broken up pretty quickly,’’ he said.
The 19-year-old said he and his mates had been sightseeing by day and enjoying the nightclubs at night. He said schoolies were offered drugs — ‘‘pseudo’’ and ‘‘mushies’’ — pretty regularly but most weren’t interested. ‘‘ Yeah, it’s pretty bad but we don’t touch any of it,’’ he said.
