- By AMY SPEAR

DARWIN’s rural voices united last night for their Carols by Candlelight at Bees Creek Primary School.

Ros McMillan, one of three on the organising committee, estimated that more than 1000 people attended.

‘‘ It’s a really fabulous evening,’’ Ms McMillan said over the sound of carols.

Emceed by Grant Fenton from the Northern Territory Farmers Association, the carols included 16 acts from both rural schools and adult groups.

It was the second year the event had been held at Bees Creek — it moved from the Humpty Doo Village Green after becoming too big.

‘‘The place is packed,’’ Ms McMillan said last night.

‘‘ There are people on chairs and blankets (in the undercover area), families in the surrounding area with candles and kids on the playground.’’

The CWA served supper and the Girl Guides, who lost their Humpty Doo hall to fire in October, raised funds by selling drinks.

‘‘It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to get together,’’ Ms McMillan said.
