Copping a bottle to head

- By DAVID WOOD

AN off duty police officer was hit in the head with a beer bottle by a driver he allegedly saw doing burnouts in front of him.

Duty Superintendent Jo Foley said the incident happened about 5.30pm on Friday when the officer was riding his motorbike home after work along Lambrick Ave in Palmerston.

She said a ute coming from the opposite direction cut him off and did burnouts at the intersection.

‘‘The driver lost control of his vehicle and came to a stop on the side of the road,’’ she said.

‘‘The off-duty officer approached the driver who assaulted the officer with his bottle of beer before leaving the scene.’’

Supt Foley said the male officer was hit in the head but was OK.

Police are looking for a dark coloured single- cab Toyota Hilux possibly made between 1995 and 2000, with no registration plates.

The driver is described as Caucasian with light coloured dreadlocked hair.

You can call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
