Give the gift that makes other gifts last

- By BEN SMEE

CHRISTMAS is a time for giving, and people have donated so much that Foodbank NT is in desperate need of a new container freezer.

The organisation, which collects and stores food donations, distributed about 20 tonnes of food to more than 100 registered charity groups in the Territory last month.

‘‘This month is going to be in excess of that because of Christmas,’’ Foodbank general manager Peter Fisher said yesterday.

Mr Fisher said the growing number of generous donations was a good problem to have, but that food would soon go to waste if the organisation wasn’t able to source a new freezer.

They placed an advertise- ment in yesterday’s NT News seeking a working freezer, a freezer requiring a small amount of repair, or a donation that could be put towards buying a freezer.

‘‘ The problem isn’t that we’re not moving the food, it’s the sheer bulk that we’re moving,’’ Mr Fisher said.

‘‘It’s one thing having a palette of frozen chicken, it’s another thing having some- where to store them and where people can get to them.

‘‘We need something large [but] we just don’t have the money to do it.’’

Foodbank NT began in a small warehouse about four years ago and is quickly outgrowing its location at Berrimah. Anyone able to help the group source a freezer should call Mr Fisher on 0401 560 980.
