Lucky hunters well equipped to have a merry little Christmas

- By BART IRWIN

ALL I want for Christmas is still out there.

But the shops have plenty of gear that a hunter could use from Boxing Day through to January 5 when the season finishes next year.

We have been blessed with a few additional hunting days during the holiday period, thanks to the great cooperation that now exists with Parks and Wildlife and NT Field and Game.

Years ago, when the season ended in mid-December, if you got a goose hunting gift for Christmas it was like getting a walkie-talkie without batteries.

NT Field and Game have a great range of stuff every hunter needs, including Magpie Goose FUD decoys, floating decoy sleds, Bird Hitches and portable hunting blinds.

If you want to know what I want, it is a ShotKam. This is a video recording training device that has become my ‘‘must have’’ for 2013.

Tammy, at Lacky’s Guns and Outdoors, says of the Howard River area: ‘‘Hunters were rewarded in spades just below the Rock Bar. Blackies and geese were abundant.’’

Isha, at Tex Gun Supplies, reported that the scores had picked up with the recent rain.

Grant, at Fishing and Out- door World, said birds were trading over Harrison towards the Adelaide River flood plain from the sanctuary of Fogg Dam.

Isha recommends the Auspit Rottisserie cooker for your Christmas goose and duck as an ideal hunter gift.

Moon phase: Waxing gibbous to full on Tuesday.

Weekly rainfall to Thursday, December 12: Gunn Point 12mm, Shoal Bay 13mm, Howard Springs Nature Park 13mm and Middle Point 3mm.
