Wu regains heights
BEIJING silver medallist Melissa Wu has made a triumphant return to the 10m platform, winning the final at the Australian diving championships in Sydney.
But the dream of four gold medals for Olympic champ Matthew Mitcham is over, after he was beaten by Victoria’s Grant Nel in the 3m springboard final yesterday.
Wu sat out most of this year with a back injury, missing the Barcelona World Championships.
‘‘It still gives me grief — it’s been a bit sore over the last couple of days,’’ she said. ‘‘But it’s so good to be back. It’s been a tough year for me in terms of a couple of aspects of my life, so I’m glad I’ve been able to overcome everything and dive well again.’’
Rachel Bugg, who is also returning to top-level competition after retiring straight after the London Olympics, finished second.
Mitcham had set his sights on winning the 1m, 3m, 10m and 3m synchro titles this weekend.
