Magpies swoopon Warriors

- By JESS WEBSTER

PALMERSTON have incredibly moved to within two points of the NTFL top five with a comefrom-behind 39-point win over Waratahs at Gardens Oval yesterday.

In a game of momentum swings, Waratahs looked to have the edge in the first half before the young Magpies turned the tables in the second half to win 16.10 (106) to 10.7 (67).

Blake Grant was dangerous with six goals and youngster Kiedan HoltTubbs chipped in with three to be the top goalscorers, after former AFL star Cameron Cloke jarred his knee in the second quarter and spent the rest of the match on the bench.

Coach Dean Rioli said the Pies have found some belief as they head into the Christmas break full of confidence.

‘‘ Cameron went down with injury and we only had one real key tall player and I think it was our run in the end that got us over the line,’’ he said.

‘‘They’ve got belief now. I knew it would be a matter of time before they clicked we’ve got some real talent and for me it was just about persisting with what we’ve got.’’

The Pies held a twopoint lead at quarter-time before the Warriors rallied to lead by 11 points at the main break.

But it all went the Magpies way thereafter as they produced 10 goals to two in a blistering second half.

Michael Handby and Luke Harder led the way for the Tahs with three goals each, with Matthew Dennis, Alwyn Davey and Justin Emery setting up the win for the Pies.
