Thorne in side of Tiwi

- By JESS WEBSTER

WANDERERS obliterated the Tiwi Bombers by 85 points in a classic shoot- out at TIO Stadium yesterday.

The Eagles were on song early and kicked nine goals straight before registering their first behind, but it was a devastating second quarter that put the 28.5 (173) to 15.5 (95) result beyond doubt.

The Bombers were hampered early when Gibson Turner hobbled off the ground with a hamstring injury moments after kicking their first goal.

The Eagles led by 23 points at quarter-time before a stunning 11-goal-to-none second quarter blew the margin out to 91 points. The Bombers went goalless from the 13-minute mark of the first until the 13-minute mark of the third when Nick McElwee converted from the square after a free kick.

But it sparked a goal frenzy for the Bombers as they kicked eight in a row to cut the deficit from a game-high 108 points to 65 at the last change.

Liam Patrick broke the drought for the Eagles with his fifth to start the last, before full-back Mitch Taylor put an exclamation mark on the win with superb contested grab and goal moments before full-time.

Co-captain Shane Thorne starred with nine goals, with Patrick chipping in with six while dominating in the ruck, and Daniel Motlop booted five and had a hand in others.

Thorne said the club strove to end the year on a high.

‘‘It’s always good to get the score on the board early, especially against Tiwi, you don’t want to muck around with these boys,’’ he said.

‘‘We had a lack of concentration and we are working on that.’’
