Chances of tropical cyclone slim but be prepared

- By BEN SMEE

THE chance of a tropical cyclone over Christmas remains low but weather forecasters say we should be prepared.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster David Mat- thews said a weak low pressure system was expected to develop in the Timor Sea, to the north of Darwin, in the coming days.

‘‘ There’s a bit of uncertainty as to the path it will take,’’ Mr Matthews said.

‘‘At this point it looks like it will move southwest and steer clear of the Territory,’’ he said. ‘‘But it’s definitely still a possibility (that a tropical cyclone will form).’’

The bureau upgraded its cyclone outlook yesterday.

There is a ‘‘ very low’’ chance of a cyclone today ( less than 5 per cent). But tomorrow and Tuesday, the likelihood is considered ‘‘low’’ (5-20 per cent.).

‘‘Although the movement of the low is uncertain in the longer term, the risk of a tropical cyclone developing in the region is expected to increase next week,’’ the cyclone outlook said.

Showers and storms are forecast to hang around over the next few days.
