Cap this, just slurp and fish

- By CLAYTON BENNETT

A TOP End fisherman has caught 16 species of fish and counting with lures made out of beer caps.

Jabiru fisho Daniel VanRas, 39, said he created the unique lures after having down time looking after his son Jayden.

‘‘ I’ve been able to take something that gets thrown in landfill and turn it into food on the table,’’ Mr VanRas said. ‘‘So far I have caught 16 different species of fish with these lures including barra, mackerel, cod, trevally, saratoga and more. The next fish I want to catch with it is flathead.’’

Mr VanRas said he had caught a total of 133 fish with his lures which have become popular in his hometown.

‘‘The golf club now saves their bottle tops for me to use so I don’t have to buy all different types of beers,’’ he said.

The lures, which he has called Bad Rash Lures are being handed out free to friends but if there is demand he may look to sell them at markets.

In the meantime Mr VanRas is focusing on landing a metre barra using the beer cap design.
