Rain gets creeks flowing

-

‘‘They are catching golden trevally, GTs and queenfish.’’

Craig’s Fishing Warehouse’s Mal Strong said there were pan-sized snapper in the harbour. ‘‘They are mainly around the Six Mile and the Larrakeyah reefs,’’ he said.

‘‘We have had plenty of rain here the past few days, some good monsoonal rain, and Channel Point was getting a heap of rain on Friday.

‘‘There are a few barra coming out of Pioneer Creek and a few out of Leaders Creek.

‘‘The Daly River has been good, and is now rising.

‘‘We had a customer go up the Adelaide River on Saturday and he said there was heaps of water in the creeks and loads of baby mullet about, but he didn’t get any barra.

‘‘The Daly River has had rain will be looking good soon — at least we are getting a wet season this year.’’

On the fishingterritory. com FFF forums, ‘‘Wombles’’ had a great session at Shoal Bay a week ago.

He wrote: ‘‘We headed out to Shoal Bay on Friday, December 20, for an all-day lockin. Left Buffalo Creek around 7.30am and headed toward The Rock and my sounder decided to stop working.

‘‘ We unplugged all the cords and switched it back only to find it was staying on the load-up screen. We kept on heading towards The Rock and stayed there for about one hour and one cod.

‘‘We decided we better go, only because we had no sounder. We headed up one of the creeks trying to get some live bait with no luck, so we waited for the low tide and then we got about eight mullet and a couple of little salmon.

‘‘We threw them out and I decided to use the little salmon and, bam, 10 minutes later a nice 107cm threadfin salmon was caught, high fives all round. Job done! Any other fish is a bonus . . .

‘‘We ran out of mullet, so for the next hour or so it was tough getting more. We got four good-sized fish in the throw net, so out they went!

‘‘My mate threw the biggest mullet of them all out and with a 15-minute wait his rod went off.

‘‘He lost it, brought the mul- let in and half of the scales were gone . . . Out it went again, and 15 minutes later . . . a nice 102cm Shoal Bay metery was landed, and the first for my boat. A great day fishing with mates.’’

The Seadogs 2013 FFF Fishing Competition winners will be announced next week.

Aurora Kakadu’s Julie Quatermass said barra were caught on the South Alligator River last week, but more reports would likely come in this weekend.

‘‘My husband went to the river mouth for reef fish on Friday but I have not heard back yet,’’ she said.

‘‘A few people were on the river on Friday and there has been a lot of rain around.

‘‘The fish bin at the ramp is a good indicator of what’s going on. People really only started going again in numbers after Boxing Day.’’
