Kids set to have a ball these holidays

- By CLAYTON BENNETT

TOP End kids wanting to don a sumo suit, play giant chess or swim among beach balls should head to the Darwin Waterfront from tomorrow.

Activities are scheduled from Monday to Friday for the next three weeks for anyone on school holidays wanting something to do.

‘‘ We’re planning something different each day,’’ Darwin Waterfront events coordinator Alana Madden said. ‘‘There are lots of mums and dads out there who have to work so this gives kids something to do for two to three hours.’’

Among the events will be a chance to muck about in the wave pool with big bouncy beach balls or create original jewellery on the lawns under the shade.

‘‘ Participants can make something special then go for a swim afterwards.’’

On Wednesday, there will be games on the lawns including belly bumpers, where kids in sumo suits try and knock each other off a mat, or magic on Thursday with Hyper the Clown.

Next week, AFL Auskick will come to the Waterfront for any youngster wanting to practice their kicks and handballs while Darwinites can slip and slide on a waterslide from next Wednesday to the following Tuesday.

Perhaps the biggest drawcard of all though will the final school holiday event.

‘‘Back by popular demand will be the Darwin Surf School at the recreational lagoon.’’

A special instructor will teach kids how to surf.
