Dream day at the MCG for Edwards
ESSENDON V RICHMOND 3.1 6.2 8.3 10.7 6.3 8.6 14.8 16.9 GOALS FOR Shane Edwards, Dreamtime at the ‘G means that little bit more.
It was only three years ago that Edwards, with the help of his grandmother, Monica — who hails from Central Australia’s Arrernte tribe — fully learnt how far back his indigenous heritage stretched.
Last night the Richmond livewire put on an inspired display in the annual MCG clash with Essendon that celebrates everything Indigenous Australians have brought to Aussie Rules football.
And while the game itself failed to reach any great heights, it again showcased indigenous talent at its best.
Be it Courtenay Dempsey’s composure coming out of defence for the Bombers, or Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti’s dash and flair, or Daniel Rioli’s instinctive tap to set up teammate Jack Riewoldt for a goal.
But it was Edwards who owned the show from the outset. The 27-year-old was instrumental in the establishment of his side’s 20-point quarter time lead, notching 12 possessions, two tackles and a goal in the first term.
He picked up where he left off after the short break, laconically setting up Riewoldt for a shot on goal early in the second.
To finish with 26 touches, Edwards must have come in to the reckoning for the Yiooken Award — instead given to Dustin Martin (pictured) — in what was a night to remember for the 177-gamer.
Fans were promised and received an exciting tussle when McDonald-Tipungwuti lined up on Rioli at half forward for the Tigers at the opening bounce.
