Attracting internatio­nal and national standard swimmers to officially christen the event makes a lot of sense.

We can then build around the combat sports – boxing and Muay Thai – and the lifestyle sports of cycling, triathlon and athletics. More individual sports like table tennis and shooting and team challenges like soccer and basketball – both large in Asia.

Underpinni­ng some of these sports can be paralympic or competitio­n for impaired athletes.

If you want motivation, then sit and watch an impaired athlete compete and then their reaction to losing.

Paralympia­ns in Rio have provided more emotion than some of our able-bodied athletes did during the Olympics.

Going down this path will add a new cost dimension to any games and unless there is some form of cost sharing then taxpayers can expect this to be an expensive addition.

It may be after a period the Government comes to the conclusion time has moved on and nothing can resurrect the Arafura Games. It may even come to the conclusion spending $20 million on additional tourism marketing will generate a better economic boost.
