TAPSELL TOAST OF CAPRICORNI­A FILM FESTIVAL

WTHE best of Territory filmmaking was celebrated at the inaugural Capricorni­a Film Awards last night.

The awards were open to all NT filmmakers and production­s telling stories about the NT.

Local Larrakia woman Miranda Tapsell took out the highly-contested award for Best Actor for her role in Words With Gods.

Tapsell gave an acceptance speech via video from Sydney where she is working on her latest role.

“I am absolutely thrilled to win the inaugural Capricorni­a award for Best Actor,” she said.

“To be recognised in my home town, on Larrakia land, makes this award something beyond special.”

Winner of Best Film went to Last Cab to Darwin and was collected by producer Greg Duffy.

Best Documentar­y went to Blown Away a film about Cyclone Tracy directed by Danielle Maclean and Best Short Documentar­y went to Arli, a film directed by Chris Fitzpatric­k about Arlun, a young Arrente man from Alice Springs and his struggle with substance abuse.

Also from Alice Springs, the Best Short Film was awarded to Nulla Nulla directed by Dylan River.

Darwin Internatio­nal Film Festival director Tim Parish said the awards showcased the broad range and high calibre of the local film industry.

“We’ve been blown away by the quality and number of the submission­s,” he said.

“I take my hat off to the judging panel.”
