Queens’ killer new season

Scream Queens is back and there are some shocks in store, literally, as CLAIRE HENDERSON finds out

-

Scream Queens is back with season two, and it’s a screamer. The previous season of this glossy US comedyhorror series revolved around a college campus rocked by a series of murders, but season two is set in a new, seriously creepy location – a mental hospital called the CURE Institute, which is notorious for its bizarre medical cases.

“Scrub up,” Dean Cathy Munsch (played by queen of screams Jamie Lee Curtis) demands in the teaser, holding up bloodsplattered hospital scrubs. This season focuses heavily on Munsch – after the success of her book and launch of the New Feminist movement, she is set to rule over healthcare by becoming the new owner of the hospital.

It’s been three years since Hester (Lea Michele), aka Chanel #6, was revealed to be the evil red devil murderer who sought revenge against the sorority house responsible for the careless death of her mother.

Back then, brassy blonde clique leader Chanel (Emma Roberts) and two of her minions, Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) and Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin), were framed for murders on campus, and received life sentences, to be served in a mental institution.

Now, the Chanels have been released from the asylum and Munsch wants them to enrol as medical students and work at her hospital, with the goal of solving incurable cases, all while decked out in wacky nurse uniforms, of course.

But where is Hester? Viewers might have to be patient to find out.

Keke Palmer and Niecy Nash return as Zayday and Denise, Glen Powell is back as Chad, and there are some exciting new faces in the medical mix too.

John Stamos plays Dr Brock Holt, the hospital’s new head surgeon, who is also a recipient of the world’s first hand transplant – and in true Scream Queens fashion, his new hand originally belonged to a squash player who murdered his opponents.

Taylor Lautner ( The Twilight Saga) is handsome Dr Cassidy Cascade, who suffers from a strange medical condition and becomes a suspect when a series of deadly events take place in the hospital.

The doctors also both take great delight in breaking the rules when it comes to professional boundaries, with rumours circulating of a new romance for one of the Chanels.

Watch out for 65-year-old Emmy-Award winner Kirstie Alley ( Cheers), who has also joined the cast as a “brilliant and devious” hospital administrator.

As Munsch’s unconventional team start solving weird, gut-churning medical cases, secrets from the hospital’s past begin to surface, and there’s a new killer casing the wards, causing mayhem within the dark walls.

“It’s in a hospital, [there’s] a lot of darkness in hospitals – dark hallways, scary rooms, sharp objects, a lot of blood, disinfectants,” Curtis has been quoted as saying. “I think it’ll be dark. I think it’s going to be very dark.”

It’s freaky, it’s eerie, but most of all, it’s a whole lot of fun. Don’t miss it.
