Gammon Girl gunning for victory

- JOSH SPASARO

LETA Smith’s Gammon Girl looks as good a chance as ever to break her maiden status at Winnellie Park tonight.

The two-year-old has picked up two second placings in her past two races over 312m. She will be running that same distance in race two tonight.

Leading Darwin Greyhound Association trainer Jamie Hosking once again has some dogs with good chances of picking up wins.

Race one’s first heat of the William Hill Battle of the Sexes over 383m has Hosking’s in-form Wayne Outwide as a leading contender from box three.

The two-year-old has won two of his three races in Darwin (both over 312m), but was also a strong performer over 380m before Hosking acquired him.

The consistent Arnhem Chaos (Ronald Phillips) and Out There Jerry (Andrew Lasker) also look dangers in a strong first race of the ninerace program.

The second heat of the William Hill Battle of the Sexes (race four) brings together a quality field.

The DGA’s second-placed trainer Graeme Ferns will have a lot to say with Puzzle Queen and Emerley Fairy, while Volantis (Russell Savige) won well last start and could measure up again.

In race five, It’s Your Money for Chris Blackman has been around the mark recently and is ideally suited in box eight.

Race six looks an even lineup, but another from the Ferns stable – Amanpour – has the ability to finish well and looks like one of the top picks.

No Condiments (Phillips) has drawn well and is a handy greyhound when near her best, so must be respected in race seven.

Must Be Max returns for Brian Kelleher in race eight and after a freshen-up will take some holding out.

And the Hosking-trained Our Josie (three wins and a second in her past four runs) is in terrific form and with a good start looks the one to beat in race nine.

The first race is at 5.38pm.
