HALLOWEEN: TERRIBLY TRENDY Australia seems to have caught America’s classic late-October spooky bug, when the clothes maketh the monster

- georgina murphy

It’s time for some spooky style on October 31. Bewitching beauty looks and ghostly glamour are the order of the occasion, as Australia embraces Halloween. Even the world’s most stylish people seek to horrify as social media goes crazy with uploads of generations of spooksters.

Google reports that, based on its search engine statistics, Harley Quinn ( Suicide Squad) was the most popular costume choice of 2015.

This year, all blood-curdling roads are leading to TV series Stranger Things for inspiration. Online store Lyst said product searches and recent online purchases trends are pointing to the popular series’ characters tricking and treating for this year.

Pop culture characters are the new creepy couture of choice for Halloween but old favourites like ghosts, witches, giant pumpkins (for those not home before midnight) and zombies are suitably scary.

Halloween may fall on a Monday, but Wednesday Addams is a still a character of choice – white collared black dress, washed out skin, long dark hair in plaits making for a trifecta of terribly traumatic style.

Beyond popular characters from the silver screen, online is going offline as smartphone emojis and snap chat filters (butterfly halo, anyone?) also join the line-up for potential dress up ideas.

From the dancing girl in a red dress to claps of thunder and yellow skinned smiles, the emoji keyboard provides a wealth of inspiration and you can even make the costume yourself.

Still not convinced on the house of horrors, here some ideas to make your outfit a scary winner:

• Look around your home for potential outfit inclusions, including recyclables like cardboard boxes, newspaper or plastic bags

• Consider adding greenery – foliage for Poison Ivy or maybe make a flower crown for ‘ Day of the Dead’ (celebrity favourite – Google it)

• Pairs and pets — find a friend and coordinate your outfits, such as the dancing emoji with black bunny ears or consider getting your pet into something Halloween-ish as a barking accessory.
