Our Jess breaks another record
JESSICA Mauboy has created music history as the first indigenous artist to debut at No.1 on the ARIA album charts.
Her Secret Daughter album features songs she performs in the show, including new single Risk It, and her unique interpretations of classic hits, including Cold Chisel’s Flame Trees and Crowded House’s Better Be Home Soon.
The Territorian thought she was being pranked when told she had scored her first No.1 debut.
She did hit No.1 with the music from the movie The Sapphires in 2012 but it took a few weeks for the record to reach that chart peak.
“I have been a recording artist in this industry for 10 years now, it’s been a heck of a ride, and I’ve had my ups and downs, my tugs of war with how I want my music to sound,” Mauboy said. “This whole record has been the dream record for me, it’s the most raw record I have ever done and I think people feel that.”
It is also the first record in her career where Mauboy was calling all the shots, choosing the songs she would sing as Billie Carter in the Channel 7 series and those she would include on the album.
“For 10 years I have been making pop records and they have to sound a certain way, clean and polished,” she said.
“But a lot of these songs are one-takes that tell the story of the song in that moment and that’s success to me.” The popular singer and actress thought said it was “quite ridiculous” her idols, indigenous artists who have inspired her including Yothu Yindi, had not been afforded the same chart-topping recognition.
She acknowledged that getting No.1 was often a lottery dictated by what other records were released that week rather than a lack of support from fans or the industry.
And she is well aware her chart-topping feat has a short shelf-life with Lady Gaga and Michael Buble competing for the title next week.
Mauboy is also up for Best Female Artist at the ARIA Awards on November 23.
The Secret Daughter airs on Channel 7 tomorrow night from 8.40pm.
