FAMILY FINDS CAT THAT WENT MISSING TWO YEARS AGO

- MOLLY BAXTER

A DOMESTIC cat who went wandering from his family two years ago has finally been returned under the strangest circumstances.

Jax the cat was living with the Gallagher family in Bayview when one night he didn’t come home for dinner, sparking a two-year hunt for the domestic short hair.

Owner Sam Gallagher said she would have given up hope if not for her daughter Lara, 12, who looked on RSPCA Darwin’s website weekly for the past two years in the hope Jax would one day appear.

Jax was six months old when he wandered two suburbs from his Bayview home, where he was found by another family who cared for him until they moved interstate.

Ms Gallagher said she hadn’t had a chance to microchip him before he disappeared.

“Lara came to me when I was having my morning coffee convinced it was Jax so when I got to work, I made the call,” she said.

“I always had doubts about it being him because there’s cats that look the same but one thing that I knew was that he’d been desexed so I just asked her a few questions about him and told the story about how we’d lost him and they called me back 20 minutes later saying it was Jax.”

Jax, who had been living the past two years with the name Roger, is now happily back with his family, who had even saved his toys from years before.

“When I bought him home yesterday, they told us to keep him in a room until he gets used to doing his thing but I sat on the bed, I called his name and he jumped up so sometimes he seems like he remembers,” Ms Gallagher said.

“We did let him in the loungeroom and the one thing he would remember is the lounge suite, as that’s where he used to hide and he went straight there so he’s settled in really well.”
