NT’s Josef stoked to win award

AN indigenous teenager from Darwin has won the Josh Hardy award at an elite private school in Melbourne.

Year 12 student Josef Lew Fatt was honoured for his good sportsmanship and happy-go-lucky attitude at the Melbourne Grammar School Valedictory Service last week.

“I’m so stoked to receive the Josh Hardy award, which is given to someone who best reflects the characteristics of Josh,” Josef said.

“It’s pretty special to get given the award, it’s great.”

Josh Hardy, originally from Darwin, was killed outside a St Kilda McDonald’s in 2014.

“I didn’t know Josh – I came to Melbourne Grammar after he left – but my family is pretty close to his family,” Josef said. “He was well liked around the community of the boarding house and loved being involved in the school and what it had to offer.”

Josef, who is halfway through his Year 12 exams, said he was also proud to get to wear Josh’s basketball number.

“I’ve been wearing the No.15 and it’s just another way to pay tribute to him,” he said.

“The number will now be passed on to other indigenous students who come to the school.”

Josef is now planning to finish off his exams and return to Darwin where he will work for about six months, before taking time off to travel around Europe.
