Boarders excel in all areas
BOARDERS at St Philip’s College in Alice Springs excel.
Dean Sullivan — the 2016 boarding captain, college vicecaptain and college dux — is testament to that.
In addition to his many responsibilities as a prefect, he was also placed third in the NT with an ATAR of 99.35.
“I would attribute my success to the dedication of the teachers at St Philip’s,” he said.
“For example, my Japanese teacher taught me in extra classes after school on some days for the last two years because I had a timetable clash, and our maths teacher held extra help sessions after school two or three days a week.”
The college’s boarding staff ensure a fun and varied program of activities are on offer after school and on weekends.
Boarders get involved in local sporting teams, church and charity organisations, they are asked to assist at local community events and functions — there is always something for them to do.
All students at St Philip’s have the opportunity to participate in the college’s extensive exchange program.
Year 8 students can apply to go on national exchange, and Year 10 students have the chance to go on international exchange.
The spectacular landscape in Central Australia is the backdrop for the outdoor education program, renowned as one of the best in Australia.
Every year students go on camp, either in the West MacDonnell or Chewings Ranges, and in Year 10, students travel to the rugged Victorian Alps.
Fifty-two years ago, St Philip’s College accepted their first boarders and since then have had students from all over the NT, QLD, SA and WA come and board.
College founder Rev Dr Fred McKay’s legacy was to ensure that children in the outback would have the same opportunities as children in the cities.
His legacy continues to this day, with St Philip’s providing opportunities for children that endeavour to develop their individuality, strengthen leadership skills and create a well rounded individual, prepared for life after school.
