Draft snub forgotten as Humphries accepts NBA Summer League deal
ISAAC Humphries has agreed to an NBA Summer League deal with the Washington Wizards, sources have told foxsports.com.au.
Humphries, from Sydney, did not hear his name called during the 2017 NBA Draft, but the Wizards were quick to scoop up the seven-footer, who worked out for the team during his pre-draft process.
The 19-year-old now has the opportunity to show his worth at the Las Vegas event, with the hopes of eventually making the team’s roster for training camp.
Humphries averaged 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in his sophomore season at the University of Kentucky, shooting 51.1 per cent from the field.
His time as a Wildcat was highlighted by what would be his final collegiate game: a 12point effort against North Carolina that nearly lifted his team into the Final Four of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
While Humphries’ minutes at Kentucky were scarce over his two seasons, he initially joined the program as a top-50 recruit in his high school class after an impressive year at Indiana’s La Lumiere School.
Humphries first came into the international spotlight during the 2014 FIBA under-17 World Championships, where he averaged 18.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game, while shooting 57.6 per cent from the field and 82.9 per cent from the free throw line.
The Las Vegas Summer League will host a plethora of Australian talent, both on the court and on the sidelines, with Humphries emerging as the latest of the pack.
The centre’s skillset for his size makes him an interesting option for teams to potentially use one of their two two-way contracts.
