Off Day pencils in another bad week

CROMWELL: Jason Day signed for a wrong score at the Traveler’s Championship on Friday before missing the cut for the second week in a row, in another disappointing performance by the world No.4.

Day shot 69 but signed for a 70 after marking a par on his card at the third hole, where he actually made birdie.

Under the rules, a player is not disqualified for signing for a higher score than he shoots.

The Australian bogeyed the last and signed for a two-over 142 total, two strokes shy of making the cut at the Cromwell course.

Last week he missed the weekend at the US Open, which also saw his world ranking drop by one.

World No.3 Rory McIlroy, who also missed the cut at the US Open and dropped one spot in the rankings, slipped while playing his approach shot to the final hole, leading to an unexpected bogey.

But the Northern Irishman eventually advanced to the weekend, right on the cut. “My right foot completely just came out from under me,” he told reporters after signing for a 73.

“As soon as I started down (on the downswing) I just felt it and I couldn’t stop. Not a very nice shot to finish with.”

The dropped shot left McIlroy sweating whether he would make the cut with his even-par 140 halfway total, but he ended up advancing, eight strokes behind halfway leader Jordan Spieth. Spieth shot a second round one-under 69 to be eight under overall, for a one-stroke lead over Troy Merritt and Chase Seiffert.

The 23-year-old Texan, who shot a first-round 63, started Friday on the back nine and had to recover from a double bogey on the 13th hole after hitting his tee shot left and out of bounds.

The best of the Australians are Marc Leishman and Greg Chalmers, at three under.

Geoff Ogilvy (two under) and Rod Pampling (one under) are in range while Camron Percy squeezed into the weekend field by a stroke.
