Golden’s gun is all Eagles need

- JOSH SPASARO

THE Men’s League Championship’s best shooter who many argue is its best player, Anthony Golden, wowed an Eagles–Ansett Round 2 match last Thursday.

The star American import finished the heavyweight clash with 39 points in his team’s 113-93 win.

His battle with fellow American import and Ansett star Jerron Jameron was a beauty, as Jamerson finished with 30 points.

Jamerson was busy in defence on opposite Golden, trying his hardest to stop the Eagles guard notching up another big points tally.

He also impressed in attack, pulling down a number of offensive rebounds.

But Golden has taken his three-point shooting to an- other level, nailing eight shots from outside the arc, a handful of which were spectacular conversions from way downtown.

After trailing by 19 points at halftime, Ansett mounted a convincing charge.

“We decided to call a timeout when they started making a run. They were giving us everything they had, so we just had to sustain the things we were doing well,” Golden said.

He took charge again from there, with his skilful floating jumper right on three-quarter time giving his team a matchwinning 14-point lead.

Golden has his elevated his game after a big off season.

“I’ve been getting up a little earlier every day and getting in the weight room when I can,” he said. “Every morning just staying consistent with it.

“It’s good to have your legs late too. That extra time in the morning is definitely paying off.”

Ansett coach Paul Rowse warned his players he would not go easy on them at training.

“What I’m disappointed in was our defensive transition which was terrible,” he said.

“If we stopped their fast break points, that’s the 20point difference.

“Anthony had a great shooting game. We did everything we could to stop that and we couldn’t.

“But if we stopped their offensive transitions we would’ve been in the game.”

Palmerston beat Essington 78-67, Rebels triumphed 80-57 over Lightning and Razzle got over the Jets 86-62.

In Women’s League Championship action, Ansett beat Eagles 84-67, the Jets had a huge 85-36 win over Razzle and the Rebels edged out Lightning 53-48.
