Dhu’s three-pointers propel Jets to another Championship

- JOSH SPASARO

THREE crucial three-pointers from experienced guard Tania Dhu were enough to sink Eagles early and ensure Tracy Village’s phenomenal titlewinning record went to 12 consecutive crowns last night, with a 76-49 grand final victory.

Eagles started the Championship grand final with plenty of energy and, in some physical and rugged opening exchanges, jumped to an early 14-10 lead.

But that was when the class and experience of Dhu shone through, her third three-point- er of the opening term coming right on quarter-time, giving her team a 22-14 lead.

“I was really happy to be able to contribute offensively, because it hasn’t been great for me this year,” Dhu said with a laugh.

Youngster Erin Greer then put herself on the end of a Tikesa Docherty-Cole intercept in the paint, before nailing a three herself to open up a big 28-14 lead early in the second term.

After Dhu’s early exploits, Tracy Village’s superior shooting went a long way towards them notching up a third- straight win over Eagles.

Another impressive Jets younger player, Leah Seden, then finished the second quarter strongly with a three before hitting two free throws.

That saw the Jets take a comfortable 40-25 lead into the main break, before controlling the second half and widening the margin.

Jets captain Kylie Duggan has played in 11 of her team’s 12 successive titles.

“This feeling doesn’t get old. It just gets better and better, and I couldn’t be more proud of the team and to be a part of this Jets team,” she said.
