The colour gods have spoken, and it’s 18-3838 - better known as Ultra Violet - that’s the hue set to enjoy a purple patch in the new year

-

IT’S not quite Christmas and it is well before the festive fireworks of the New Year have even started in our skies, but the colour gods have spoken, and in 2018 we will be in a purple haze in the year of Ultra Violet, official code 18-3838. Fashionistas are looking to the shade to what Pantone have said is a mystical, serene inclusion for a fresh new year.

Described by Pantone as a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, Ultra Violet is being heralded by some commentators as a tranquil tone when the world appears in so much upheaval.

In all of its rich, regal glory, Ultra Violet will pave the purple path for the softest shade of violet to deep rich jewelled tones of dark purple.

It’s a colour that’s expected to be replicated across beauty trends, graphic design and packaging, food, interior design and homewares, let alone fashion.

Historically, purple was known as the colour of royalty, as it was the most expensive colour to produce.

Modern efficiencies have made it a colour for commoners too, but it’s still a popular colour for both Her Majesty and Princess Catherine wardrobe too. Perhaps Meghan Markle will look to maeve as her go-to shade.

With such a varied range of shades on the palette, it means there’s a tone to suit everyone.

Purple transcends seasons and is just at home in the sunshine in a light, linen summer dress, as it is in heavier, traditionally winter fabrics like velvet.

It can add a luxe touch to your outfit through purple accessories, or be accentuated through adding metallic colours, or toned down with nudes, soft pinks and pastels.

Those of us who are bold with colour would look to block-pair purple with red, green or blues.

The Pantone Colour Institute, a consulting service that forecasts global colour trends and advises companies on colour in brand identity and product development, is recognised around the world as the go-to expert on colours.

Through its seasonal trend forecasts, the colour direction from Pantone has become just at home in our wardrobe as the black party dress, statement heels and your favourite handbag.
