BACK IN BLACK 2018 brings with it a whole new world of wardrobe choices, with Hollywood’s celebrities leading the charge at the Golden Globes
THIS year is the Lunar year of the dog, and early indication is that fashion will certainly be barking, or perhaps (the more elegant) talking, in 2018. What we wear, or don’t wear, has always made a statement of sorts, but now more than ever. It’s not just about painting a pretty point, but crafting a look to make a political comment or state our stance on an issue.
This may be as simple and unsubtle as logo and slogan printed T-shirts, such as the perhaps ironically priced $700 ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ cotton tee by Dior.
Short of the three figure sellout cotton Tshirt, social media means that we can all be part of the conversation and we need look no further than #TimesUp at this week’s Golden Globes ceremony, where prolific online commentary celebrated a black wash of a red carpet. CLOSER to home, Territorians will again be spoiled for choice this year with opportunities to frock up or dress down throughout 2018.
We can make our own statements through choosing to #ShopLocal #ShopSmall and celebrate Territory designer talent and owneroperated retailers.
In the warmer months, best described as the Wet season, we can hone our year round summer looks, experimenting with the current stripe, check and gingham trend, perfecting the look for the forthcoming events of the Dry.
In January and February, the Territorian staple diet of denim, sandals, flip flops and light weight fabrics will still be on high rotation, complemented by treasures that can be found at local markets, boutiques and by up-andcoming designers. By March, we can head to the Tiwi Islands AFL grand final and art sale to lust over indigenous textiles ready for their next life as a masterpiece in your wardrobe.
After the Easter bunny visits, and the weather starts to turn, Territory event goers and fashionistas will be shopping, sketching and stitching for the upcoming events calendar, laden with cocktail parties, formal functions and balls, race days and sporting events.
Let’s keep fashion talking this year.
