Savige on track for hot hundred

- JOSH SPASARO

VETERAN Darwin greyhound trainer Russell Savige should notch up the magic 100 winners for this year at Winnellie Park tonight.

And he has a great chance to oversee a victor in the $1650 Nightcliff Sports And Social Club feature race seven.

The flying Rapido takes the next step, pushing out to the 537m journey and should prove hard to run down.

Quintus Maximus (Jamie Hosking) should finish solidly, and don’t discount Kraken Bolt (Steele Bolton).

Sunbaker (Andrew Lasker) is an improving type and can go on with the job in race one.

Some of the better hopes have drawn out wider in race two, including Town Hall Tully (Ron Phillips) and Never Fear (Savige).

There are a couple of promising youngsters engaged in race three, with last start winner Kakadu Kate (Savige) and the Brian Kelleher-trained Barcia Size, who did appear a little unlucky last start.

Leta Smith has her team back racing tonight, and Imitate out of box eight must come strongly into calculations.

There was nothing wrong with the way Mileeka handled the step up in distance last start, and box one should assist her chances again for Simon Nathanael in race five.

Ron Phillips’ pair Well Off and Kappa have drawn nicely, and both have enough ability to make their presence felt in race six.

The number-one box for Yaringa Lass (Savige) should prove ideal in race eight.

It is hard to go past Hawk Glide (Graeme Ferns) who has been going well of late, and an empty box either side of him should make him the clear top pick in race nine.

It is a small race-10 field to finish a good night’s racing but it has its share of class, including Distant Shores (Chris Blackman) who will enjoy the outside draw.

Last-start winner Gardot (Nick Day) and Secret Gold (Savige) will also be hard to beat.
