THE four people killed in the Territory’s worst fatality in recent years are understood to have been long-term residents at a Kakadu community.

A 49-year-old woman and two men, aged 39 and 46, died at the scene.

Another man aged 45 passed away while on the way to hospital.

The NT News has been told by a member of the public who did not wish to be named that three overseas tourists came across the crash Friday morning.

THE four people killed in the Territory’s worst fatality in recent years are understood to have been long-term residents at a community of Kakadu.

The silver Nissan X-Trail was involved in a single vehicle rollover on the Kakadu Highway overnight Thursday which claimed the lives of three men and a woman.

NT Police investigations yesterday have led them to understand it was not two men and two women killed as previously thought.

A 49-year-old woman and two men, aged 39 and 46, died at the scene.

Another man aged 45 passed away while on the way to hospital.

A 33-year-old woman sur- vived the crash, walked from the scene and flagged down a passing motorist.

The crash occurred near the Bukbukluk turn-off.

The NT News has been told by a member of the public who did not wish to be named that three overseas tourists came across the crash site early on Friday morning.

They said the men had initially thought the crash was an old wreck but turned around to check. They notified the rangers. It’s understood the occupants of the car crash were residents of Patonga Homestead, near Jim Jim Falls.

They were last seen leaving the Mary River Roadhouse at 8.30pm Thursday.

Mary River Roadhouse lessee Tony Stanely said the people had been visiting the homestead for years.

He said they would come and visit every couple of weeks and that they were well known in the area.

“It’s a very sad thing that happened and they were very nice people,” he said.

“It’s had an impact on everyone around here.”

Police are continuing to ask for witnesses to come forward as investigators piece together the circumstances around the crash. Major Crash investigators are preparing a report for the coroner.
