Markets to finish up with a real flourish

- NATASHA EMECK

THE countdown to the end of the dry season markets is on with only a handful of opportunities to get to Mindil, Malak and Palmerston markets before the end of the month.

With the final Mindil Beach Sunset Market event on this Thursday, general manager Peter Ayre said they had seen a decline in crowd numbers this year which reflects an overall downturn in retail across Darwin.

“My focus is on reintroducing local people to our markets,” he said. “Especially during this time of year, when things get a bit quieter which is probably more appealing for locals.

“So our final markets this Thursday is the perfect opportunity to come down, enjoy the sunset and rediscover the Mindil markets.”

Mr Ayre said there would be a fireworks display, live music from NT muso Stevie Jean, and UK chef Jack Stein will be out doing some filming for his new show, Jack Stein: Born to Cook Down Under.

Palmerston Market co-ordinator Ross Dudgeon said their last event of the year will be on Friday.

“It’s been a lovely season for us,” he said. “Our numbers have been pretty good, we don’t tend to get a lot of tourists, it’s mostly just families coming out for a nice night out.

“This Friday we’ve got Piper the clown back from her trip in India, who’s being doing some yoga, there will also be a jumping castle and live music.”

The last Malak Marketplace will be on Saturday.
