HUNTERS ARE THE NT’S MOST SURPRISING CONSERVATIONISTS

-

THE long and winding road to Gunn Point is going to be a ripper.

I travelled it with an NT Park’s Ranger last week and was very impressed with how the contractors are putting this vital bit of infrastructure in.

I had heard there were issues with access to Howard Swamp and Shoal Bay hunting reserves.

This is true if you travel the original Gunn Pt Rd but if you take the Powerline Track at the earliest entry point just beyond the bitumen all westward tracks are open and accessible.

So far, we have identified five entry points to the reserves that will have all weather access from Gunn Point Road and we may be adding a couple more.

Darryl Yesberg of Coolalinga Guns & Ammo reported that the hunting was hot and fast at Lambell’s Lagoon being the favourite for goose hunters.

“The birds are leaving at dawn and returning for a drink about 9am. The early birds will get their geese and for those that enjoy ‘Gentlemen’s hours’ they can have sleep in. Beatrice Lagoon is great for ducks but only a few geese”, he said.

Finally, the rain fell on the plain with Harrison getting a good dump on Sunday the Howard area getting a drink on Tuesday.

It will take some weeks for the rain to make a difference in the dry swamps but every shower at this time of year helps to begin the process where Howard and Shoal Bay will become the centre of attention for goose hunters that know the area well.

Recent rainfall recorded by Wednesday, 17 October: Howard Springs Nature Park, 26mm and Middle Point, 20mm.

NT Field and Game were the proud winner of the Field and Game Australia Media award for excellence in all forms of print, electronic and social media.

They also came third in the nation with the prestigious Blue Wing Conservation award for the Weed Control Project conducted at Harrison Dam over the past two years thanks to a generous NT Government grant. It just goes to show the hunters in NT Field and Game are the Territory’s most surprising conservationists.

Come out and try clay target shooting every Friday arvo at the NT Field and Game range, Brandt Rd, Mickett Creek Shooting Complex, Knuckey Lagoon from 5pm till 9pm. Today there is 50 target Simulated Field shoot at the range from 8am. All welcome.
