SPORT Trainer dreams of west

- GLENN McFARLANE Chatham Stakes

ULTRA- CONSISTENT galloper Dreamforce may have booked a ticket to Perth for the Railway Stakes with a gritty win in the Group 3 Chatham Stakes yesterday at Flemington.

Having previously won the Group 1 race with Gathering in 2010, trainer John Thompson believes Dreamforce would be very competitive in the west after showing great fight to hold off the fast-finishing Widgee Turf to claim his ninth win from 21 starts.

“If we run again, we will go to Perth,” Thompson said. “If not, we will spell for the autumn.

“He would be a good horse for that (the Railway). It’s a bit of a front runner’s track.

“We’ve won there before with a similar horse (Gathering). He ticks all the boxes for it, but if you do go there then it probably rules you out of the autumn so we’ve got to decide what we’ll do.

“We’ll talk to the owners and go from there.”

Having been scratched from last week’s Kennedy Mile, Thompson was always confident the well-bred Fastnet Rock gelding would acquit himself well, following his strong second to Sircconi in the Moonga Stakes last month.

“He’s really thrived in the last two weeks,” he said.

“We were a little but worried where we were going to get to from the wide gate but I was hoping to get a sit.

“Damian (Lane) took up the running and credit to the horse and he kept kicking.”

Dreamforce ($7) led throughout, but had to fight off Widgee Turf ($6.50), holding a half neck margin at the end. Perast ($10) was third.
