PRIME Minister Scott Morrison has come out swinging in the aftermath of the fatal Bourke St terrorist attack.

“I need to call it out. “Radical, violent, extremist Islam that opposes our very way of life,” he said.

He said no religion was immune from extremism.

“But here in Australia, we would be kidding ourselves if we did not call out the fact that the greatest threat of religious extremism in this country is the radical and dangerous ideology of extremist Islam,” Mr Morrison said.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten echoed his political rival’s sentiments.

The leaders’ comments come amid revelations that terrorist Hassan Khalif Shire Ali had planned to kill many more people than he managed to in Friday’s Bourke St attack in Melbourne.

Police believe the way in which the 30-year-old packed gas cylinders into his Holden ute before setting a fire shows his aim was to cause mass casualties.

In the end, his failure to build a more sophisticated bomb meant that aspect of his attack failed.

He stabbed Melbourne cafe owner Sisto Malaspina to death and injured two other men before shot by police.
