TIME TO GET SNACKY AT CASUARINA COASTAL RESERVE

- PHILLIPPA BUTT

FOOD vans could be coming to the Casuarina Coastal Reserve.

A community consultation process found support for mobile food vans to operate at a limited number of locations within the reserve.

About 84 per cent of respondents to a community survey indicated support for small scale commercial operations within the reserve, with conditions to protect its environmental, cultural and recreational values.

A framework is being developed to ensure there are clear guidelines to manage activity in line with these values, including limiting food vans to three locations (one at Rapid Creek two at the Dripstone Cliffs) and implementing a permit system for the reserve.

There will also be a limit of just three vans for the whole reserve.

Food vans will not only have to comply with the framework, but also with environmental conservation laws and the reserve’s management plan.

Tourism and Culture Minister Lauren Moss said the food vans would bring more jobs to the local area.

“Casuarina Coastal Reserve is a much-loved and popular coastal recreational area with more than 900,000 visitors each year,” Ms Moss said.

“The addition of food vans will enhance visitor experiences and support local jobs.”

Territorians interested in operating a mobile food van at the reserve will be invited to submit an expression of interest in January. For more information, email True North Strategic Communication on truenorth@truenorthcomm.com.au
